Give them a Hand
Students are to draw their hands in two different positions. While drawing their hands, students are to hold a piece of string, which helps to create real positions as well as to keep the hand still. They are allowed to chose one word that has meaning (except their name) to put in the middle. Students are encouraged to use cursive writing for their word in the middle.
Notan Art
Nōtan (濃淡?) is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark as they are placed next to the other in art and imagery. This use of light and dark translates shape and form into flat shapes on a two-dimensional surface. Nōtan is traditionally presented in paint, ink, or cut paper.
Learning Goals:
1. To learn about Notan.
2. To learn about positive and negative space.
3. To use a simple square and all the negative cuttings to create a collage, which will inspire a mask.
4. To understand about symmetry and asymmetry, and the Principle of Design, Balance.
5. To understand the Elements of Art: Space and Shape (Positive and Negative).
